The Coal Authority – Slag Heap Monitoring
Monitoring slag heaps for movement is an important task for the Coal Authority to maintain the safety of these disused sites.
The Coal Authority wanted to use a more automated method for this monitoring. SCISYS leveraged its experience in software, GIS, and modelling – acquired from over 30 years’ developing software and robotics for space, industrial and governmental industries.
A drone with an automated flight path was deployed over the slag heap and surrounding area. Equipped with high-resolution optical imaging equipment it captured the slag heap and surrounding area.
SCISYS ortho-rectified and combined this imagery to create a highly detailed 3D model of the area with centimetre precision.
From the 3D model accurate measurements were able to be taken and the area closely inspected. The outputted model was easily navigated with a phone, tablet, PC, or through virtual reality (VR).
Change Detection and Machine Learning
Surveying slag heaps with unmanned aerial systems and creating a 3D model enables future surveys to yield automated change detection.
This brings possibilities to combine with SCISYS’ machine learning based pattern, defect and object recognition, to automate the identification of areas of interest.
