Case Study: Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)

Defra Analysis Ready Data (ARD) Production Facility

With a remit to improve the use of data, the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) identified the need for a central facility that would automate the generation of Earth Observation analysis-ready data (ARD).

Together with Defra, SCISYS has built the first phase of an ARD production facility for European Space Agency (ESA) Sentinel satellite data using open-source and cloud technologies.  In addition, SCISYS has provided APIs enabling interconnected geo applications to exploit the new data source and its open architecture will allow rapid and flexible development for future requirements. The next phase will bring this solution into full production operation so that a single source of ARD is easily accessible to a wider Defra audience.
